2024 Pre-Season Profile: Minnesota Twins

 #22
The Minnesota Twins went through some cost cutting this off-season.  Will the result still bring about wins in 2024?

#21 - 3rd in AL Central
MIH - Byron Buxton
MIP - Kenta Maeda
PTW - Simeon Woods Richardson
FP - Byron Buxton plays more games in 2023 than Carlos Correa.

2023 Results
#10 - 87-75, 1st in AL Central, lost in ALDS
Highest WAR (Position) - Ryan Jeffers
Highest WAR (Pitcher) - Sonny Gray
The AL Central is always up for grabs, and the Twins went out and took it in 2023.  They did this with only half a season from their most talented player in Byron Buxton.  Their pitching carried them.  Their rotation pitched well enough that the lineup just needed to score enough.  It was good enough for a division championship and a playoff run.

Additions / Subtractions
The Twins were active this off-season moving payroll around and saving money.  Gone are Jorge Polanco, Joey Gallo, Michael A. Taylor, Sonny Gray, Kenta Maeda, Emilio Pagan, and Jorge Lopez.  Coming to the Twins in their place are Carlos Santana, Chris Paddack, Anthony DeSclafani, and Justin Topa.  The subtraction list is much more impressive than the addition list.

Most Important Hitter
Edouard Julien
One of the breakout stars for the Twins in 2023 was Edouard Julien at second base.  All he did was hit, gathering a 130 ERA+ with a .263 average, 16 homers in just 109 games.  Entering only his age 25 season, the Twins felt good enough about Julien to trade away their All Star second baseman in Jorge Polanco.  Now Julien has to show that 2023 was the start of something great instead of a fluky flash to start his career.

Most Important Pitcher
Pablo Lopez
With Sonny Gray and Kenta Maeda moving on, Pablo Lopez is now the true ace of the Twins.  Coming off a solid season with a 117 ERA+, Lopez has become a trendy dark horse pick for the Cy Young in 2024.  With the loss of depth in their rotation, the Twins need Lopez to be that good to anchor that rotation.  Otherwise, the team will need to score a lot more than last season.

Prospect to Watch
Brooks Lee
If the Twins need to score in 2024, Brooks Lee might be a major factor in doing so.  Sporting the 15th best farm system in baseball, the Twins have four prospects in the Top 100, and Lee is the one most likely to impact the team this season.  Ranked the 18th best prospect in baseball, and the 2nd best prospect in the system, Brooks Lee is a 23 year old switch hitting shortstop that just knows how to hit.  A first round pick in 2022, Lee looks to have an impact at some point in 2024 for the big league club.

2024 Prediction
4th in AL Central
The AL Central is as unpredictable of a division as I have seen in awhile.  While the AL East has 4 elite teams and one good team, the AL Central has 4 average teams and one bad team.  Anything can happen.  With the steps back due to payroll the Twins took, I see them taking a step back, however never count out the Twins.  They will always be interesting.

Fearless Prediction
Half the Twins Opening Day lineup will be traded before the start of 2025.
The Twins tried to reset some payroll this off-season while still competing.  If they struggle like I think they might, there could be a full reset in order.  Names like Max Kepler and Alex Kirilloff were already on the trade block leading into this season, and Carlos Santana is a perennial Trade Deadline acquisition.  Do they finally give up on Byron Buxton?  Does Royce Lewis become expendable to make room for Brooks Lee?  Does Carlos Correa?  The Twins could become very interesting next off-season.

2023 Pre-Season Profile: Minnesota Twins

 #21
The Minnesota Twins had a mediocre season in 2022, but followed it up with a curiously fascinating offseason.  Will it lead to a better season in 2023?

#17 - 3rd in AL Central
MIH - Byron Buxton
MIP - Chris Paddack
PTW - Joe Ryan

2022 Results
#18 - 78-84, 3rd in AL Central
Highest WAR (Position) - Carlos Correa
Highest WAR (Pitcher) - Jhoan Duran
The Minnesota Twins made a splash leading into 2022 by landing one of the top shortstops in the game in Carlos Correa.  He had an outstanding season for them, while Luis Arraez won the batting title.  However, their pitching struggled to keep pace with their offense.  It led to a lackluster season in a division that wasn't very good.

Additions / Subtractions
The Twins made some interesting waves in the offseason this year.  After Carlos Correa agreed to a contract with the Giants, and then the Mets, he ended up back in Minnesota on a huge deal.  Then they traded their batting champ to Miami for starter Pablo Lopez.  They also traded Gio Urshela to the Angels for a minor leaguer.  They signed catcher Christian Vazquez to be their new backstop replacing Gary Sanchez.  They also took a flier on Joey Gallo as a reclamation project.  Add in the signing of Michael A. Taylor as insurance for Byron Buxton's brittle body, and it was a fascinating offseason.

Most Important Hitter
Byron Buxton
It's going to be true every year until it isn't.  The success of the Twins is tied directly to Byron Buxton's health.  He is entering his 9th season in the big leagues (age 29 season), and only once has he been able to play over 100 games, and that was back in 2017.  He made his first All Star team in 2022, but only played in 92 games.  However, in those 92 games, he hit 28 homers, a 135 OPS+, and had a 4.0 WAR.  The Twins can be good without Buxton, but they won't be great without him.  He might be the biggest X-factor in the league.

Most Important Pitcher
Kenta Maeda
The Twins have been working hard trying to improve their pitching staff for awhile now.  After starting a rookie pitcher on Opening Day in 2022, the Twins traded for starter Tyler Mahle and closer Jorge Lopez mid-season last year.  Then they traded for Pablo Lopez this offseason.  However, the solution to their rotation might simply be getting healthy.  The last time we saw Kenta Maeda for a full season, he almost won the 2020 Cy Young.  He is finally healthy again, but he's also entering his age 35 season.  If Maeda can get back to where he was in 2020, the starting rotation might be better than it has been for awhile.

Prospect to Watch
Simeon Woods Richardson
The Twins have a top 10 farm system with 3 players in the Top 100 Prospects.  With their former #1 overall pick in Royce Lewis recovering from yet another ACL tear, the most likely impact from their deep prospect pool might be Simeon Woods Richardson.  This starting pitcher has found himself the centerpiece of two different blockbuster trades, first going from the Mets to the Blue Jays in the Marcus Stroman deal of 2019, then going from the Blue Jays to the Twins in the Jose Berrios deal in 2021.  Now he is ready to show what he can do at the big league level.  For a starting rotation always looking for extra help, Woods Richardson will definitely get an opportunity at some point this season to show what he can do.  It might also be the longest name ever to have to fit on the back of a jersey.

2023 Prediction
3rd in AL Central
The Twins are kicking off their brand new uniforms with a season where they could really finish anywhere from first to third.  So much of what they do this year depends on health.  Their pitchers have to stay healthy, and their stars have to stay healthy.  Not only is Buxton an injury liability, but Carlos Correa couldn't get a contract from a big market due to possible injury concerns.  Too much can go wrong, and with teams a little less volatile in front of them, this is where I see the Twins ending up.

Fearless Prediction
Byron Buxton plays more games in 2023 than Carlos Correa.
The only way for this whole Carlos Correa saga to end is for him to get hurt this year, right?  Two different organizations wouldn't sign off on his surgically repaired leg and ankle from his minor league days.  The Twins took the leap, but already knew the risk.  Either Correa is a borderline MVP this year or he gets hurt.  There is no in between.  We all know Buxton will be hurt at some point, so if Correa plays less than Buxton, the Twins are having a rough year.

2021 Pre-Season Profile: Houston Astros

 #13
The Houston Astros struggled in the 2020 regular season, barely making the playoffs, but once they were in they were a game away from making the World Series.  What will come next for one of the most successful teams of the last 5 years?

#6 - 1st in AL West, lose in ALDS
MIH - Carlos Correa
MIP - Lance McCullers Jr.
PTW - Forrest Whitley

2020 Results
#16 - 29-31, 2nd in AL West, lost in ALCS
If any team benefited from the COVID layoff and no fans in 2020, it was the Houston Astros.  Coming off a huge scandal with sign stealing, by the time the season start in 2020, the narrative had changed and there were no fans to heckle them.  With all that said, the Astros struggled in the regular season, finishing below .500 and only making the playoffs because of the special 2020 rule that all second place finishers make the playoffs.  Their postseason run did show they know what to do when they get there though, losing in Game 7 of the ALCS to the Rays.  So was 2020 a successful season?  Yes and no.

Additions / Subtractions
Everyone knew the core of this Astros team wouldn't be able to stay together forever.  At some point, when all these young players are ready to get paid, some were going to move on.  For the first time, this happened this offseason as George Springer, the team's best player in 2020, signed in free agency with the Toronto Blue Jays.  Outfielder Josh Reddick also is no longer on the roster.  Both spots the Astros chose to replace internally.  In terms of pitching, they brought in Jake Odorizzi late in the process to help compensate for some injuries suffered during Spring Training.  For a team that was loading up talent only a few years ago, the Astros seemed to have reached a point where they are just trying to maintain as much as possible.

Most Important Hitter
Jose Altuve
Many players in the Astros' lineup had lackluster shortened seasons in 2020, but no one struggled quite like Jose Altuve.  The former league MVP has earned the reputation as one of the best hitters in baseball, but 2020 led to a .219 average and a 71 OPS+, both career lows.  Could he have bounced back if given a full 162?  Maybe.  Could his production have dropped due to the sign stealing scandal?  Maybe.  He needs to bounce back in 2021, not only to show everyone his reputation was earned and not stolen, but also because the Astros need the bat to set the table at the top of their lineup.  Losing leadoff hitter George Springer leaves a huge hole in the Astros' lineup.  If Altuve gets back to doing Altuve things, it will go a long way to replacing that production.

Most Important Pitcher
Cristian Javier
The Astros had some pretty big seasons out of some unheralded young pitchers in their rotation, especially after ace Justin Verlander went down after Opening Day.  Between Jose Urquidy, Framber Valdez, and Cristian Javier, the Astros were able to round out a solid rotation alongside Zack Greinke and Lance McCullers Jr.  This was shown particularly in the playoffs.  Now, the Astros are counting on them to repeat that production in 2021.  Framber Valdez broke a finger in his first Spring start and might miss the season.  This makes Cristian Javier that much more important.  Entering his age 24 season and coming off a 3rd place finish in the Rookie of the Year voting, Javier will be counted on to have another strong season and become one of the aces of this staff.

Prospect to Watch
Pedro Leon
The Astros built this roster from the ground up.  When you do that as successfully as the Astros have done, you are going to go from a top farm system to a bad farm system.  That's what has happened here.  The Astros only have one Top 100 prospect in Forrest Whitley, who probably should have made his debut by now if it weren't for some injuries and suspensions.  Now he is down with Tommy John and will delay his debut even longer.  So let's talk about someone else that might actually play in 2021.  Pedro Leon is a Cuban defector that signed with the Astros just days before George Springer signed with the Blue Jays.  Now, the Astros are looking at this outfielder as Springer's possible replacement in centerfield.  If Miles Straw struggles in center, look for the 22 year old Leon to be given a shot sooner rather than later, even though he will only be playing his first season in the states.

2021 Prediction
2nd in AL West
There are so many question marks surrounding this team in 2021.  Can the lineup be productive without George Springer?  How much does Zack Greinke have left in the tank?  Can the kids in the rotation repeat their strong 2020 seasons?  Will Yordan Alvarez's knee hold up this season?  Will the Astros make a decision about Carlos Correa during his contract year?  And most importantly, how will the roster react to actually having to deal with fans for the first time since they were punished for the sign stealing scandal?  How will they react to watching their World Series winning manager walk into Houston wearing a Detroit Tigers jersey?  Could the Astros make the playoffs this year?  Absolutely.  Could they win the division?  Sure.  Could they finish in 3rd or 4th place in the division?  Not impossible.  There are just too many questions to predict them to do too much.  All I have to say is the rest of the league is hoping they stay out of the postseason.  No matter how their season goes, last season showed they are always dangerous in the playoffs.

Fearless Prediction
One of the Astros three core players left is playing their last season as an Astro.
Carlos Correa is entering his contract year and will be looking for a big pay day.  Jose Altuve is getting paid top dollar but is coming off a bad season.  Alex Bregman also struggled in 2020, but already has a sizable contract.  The Astros want to re-sign Correa, but will it cost them one of the other stars on their team?  I think either Correa goes elsewhere or they find a way to move on from one of their other stars.  This season has the potential to show the Astros they need to start to deepen their talent pool and roster instead of invest in the few left from their World Series core.  So many teams have copied the Astros' blueprint of success over the last several years.  Now they are going to be the trend setters on how maintain once everyone needs to be paid.  Or is it worth maintaining?  Either way, it will be fascinating to see what they do.

2017 Pre-Season Profile: Houston Astros

#4

Sports Illustrated predicted the Houston Astros would win the 2017 World Series ... in 2014!  The Astros made the playoff appearance in 2015 with their young stars, but followed it up with a letdown season in 2016.  Will 2017 prove the Sports Illustrated writers to be geniuses, or will they underwhelm once again?

My 2016 Predictions
1st in AL West, lose in ALDS
Carlos Correa will win the AL MVP.

2016 Results
84-78, 3rd in AL West
The win total of the Houston Astros only dropped two games from 2015 to 2016, however everyone around them got better, dropping them to third in their division with no chance at a playoff birth.  The 2015 Astros were much better than they were supposed to be.  This raised expectations much higher than was realistic for 2016.  A key example of this was Carlos Correa, who exploded in 2015, but did not come close to winning the MVP as I predicted he would do.

Additions / Subtractions
For so long, the Astros have been all about building the farm system and building the future.  The 2017 offseason showed that the Astros have arrived at that future.  All of a sudden, they started to spend money and acquire veterans to complement their group of young stars.  Josh Reddick was brought in to start in rightfield.  Nori Aoki was brought in to start in leftfield.  Brian McCann was brought in to be a power-hitting catcher.  Carlos Beltran was brought back to Houston to try and relive some of his past heroics in an Astros uniform.  The only notable subtractions were upgrades at catcher (McCann over Jason Castro) and leftfield (Aoki over Colby Rasmus).

Most Important Hitter
Carlos Correa
It is easy to forget that Carlos Correa is only 22 years old.  Being a number one overall pick and having instant success will make that happen.  With all that said, Correa is a centerpiece of this franchise and a key to the Astros' present and future success.  I predicted him to be the MVP last season, which may have been a little premature.  However, he needs to be at an MVP caliber this season or very soon after for the Astros to reach the championship level they feel they can reach.

Most Important Pitcher
Dallas Keuchel
In 2015, Dallas Keuchel won the Cy Young.  Again, when players find instant success, quite often a player regresses the next season.  That is what happened for Keuchel.  He went 9-12 with a 4.55 ERA, far from his Cy Young level.  Many people believe the Astros should have traded for Jose Quintana over the offseason (and still might mid-season) because of the fact that no one knows if there is a true ace on this staff.  Whether a trade happens for Quintana or not, Dallas Keuchel needs to get back to the level he was at in 2015 if the Astros want to get back to the playoffs.

Player to Watch
David Paulino
The Astros have several prospects that could play a role for the team in one of two ways.  They may either make an impact for the team down the stretch, or they might be part of a package that helps bring an ace like Jose Quintana into Houston.  David Paulino is one of those propects.  This 23 year old pitcher got a taste of the big leagues at the end of 2016 and could be a presence in the rotation for the Astros (or White Sox) at any point this season.

2017 Prediction
1st in AL West, lose in ALCS
After a year of regression, I see 2017 as the year the Astros take the next step forward.  They have such a great combination of young budding stars and established veterans that have been there before.  They should have no problem scoring runs.  Their pitching will be good and potentially great if they make the trade everyone expects them to make at some point.  They won a Wild Card Game and went to the ALDS in 2015.  Look for the Astros to win their first AL West division title ever and make it all the way to the ALCS this season.

Fearless Prediction
Jose Quintana will be an Astro before Memorial Day.
It won't take the Astros long to realize they need that extra arm in their rotation.  The White Sox want to get rid of Quintana, and he would be a perfect fit in Houston.  With all the moves the Astros made this offseason, it is obvious they want to win either this year or next year.  If one more move is going to get you there, you make the move.  Look for it to happen sooner rather than later.

2016 Pre-Season Profile: Houston Astros

The Houston Astros were the surprise of the 2015 season.  Can they continue to take steps forward in 2016?

Last Season
My 2015 Prediction: 3rd in AL West
2015 Result: 86-76, 2nd in AL West, WILD CARD, lost in ALDS
I knew the Astros would take some steps forward in 2015, however I did not see this coming.  A few years back, the Astros tore their roster apart and made themselves next to embarrassing for several years as they made the transition to the American League.  They said they had a plan, and 2015 started to show what that plan was.  They have established a solid young core, and they were willing to go out and find help down the stretch.  If it wasn't for a bad hop in the ALDS that allowed the Royals to advance and eventually win the World Series, who knows how far the Astros would have gone.

2016 Additions / Subtractions
The great thing about having such a young roster is there aren't many adjustments that need to be made to get ready for the next year.  They traded some prospects to bring in hard-throwing reliever Ken Giles.  They let all-or-nothing slugger Chris Carter go to make room for even more youth at first base.  They brought in Doug Fister to add some depth to their rotation.  Other than that, their roster is the same as it was in September.

Most Important Hitter
Carlos Correa
Carlos Correa burst on the scene in 2015 as a 20 year old phenom and helped put the Astros into the playoffs.  Now they are counting on him to help anchor their lineup.  He has all the skills to do it, but he needs to show that he can be the superstar everyone thinks he can be.

Most Important Pitcher
Doug Fister
Last year, the Nationals boasted a rotation with five aces: Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg, Jordan Zimmermann, Gio Gonzalez, and ... who was the last one?  Oh yeah, it was Doug Fister.  Fister had been the most consistent pitcher for the Nationals over the last several years.  However, a series of injuries left him looking for a job this offseason.  The Astros brought him in to add depth to their rotation, but if he can get healthy, he can help anchor the staff along with Dallas Keuchel.

Player to Watch
A.J. Reed
The first couple weeks of the season have seen an unlikely emergence of first baseman Tyler White.  One of the aspects that made it so unlikely is the fact that A.J. Reed is the future first baseman of this team.  Tyler White most likely will not keep up this pace, which can make room for Reed to hop in and be the latest young cog to keep this machine rolling.

2016 Prediction
1st in AL West, lose in ALDS
It really felt like the Astros were a year early in 2015.  Now they are ready to take the next step.  Look for them to win the division, but not get much further in the playoffs than last season.  They always said they were trying to win the World Series in 2017 or 2018.  They will definitely be in a position to do that.  All this playoff experience will do them well.

Fearless Prediction
Carlos Correa will win the AL MVP.
Everyone says Carlos Correa looks like the next Alex Rodriguez at shortstop.  If you remember, A Rod almost won the MVP in his sophomore season.  I can see Correa having a similar rise to super-stardom.  Everyone talks about Mike Trout and Bryce Harper as the best players in baseball.  By the end of 2016, Carlos Correa will be added to that elite list.

MLB 2015: Year in Review & Postseason Picks

What a season of baseball!  This was one of the most unpredictable seasons I can remember.  Teams that were supposed to be irrelevant challenged for or made the postseason, and other teams floundered under high expectations.  This has led to something baseball has been looking for: parody.  More and more, every team has a shot at the postseason.  This made for an exciting month of September, as six or seven teams were still competing for some spots in the playoffs.  The best thing you can say about September baseball is it was able to stay relevant in the midst of the starts of college football and the NFL.  Now that it is October, who will become this year's Royals?  Who is best positioned to dominate like Madison Bumgarner did last year?  (Easy answer ... no one...)  Let's look at where everyone finished and how it compares with my preseason predictions.

AL East
My Preseason Predictions
1.  Toronto Blue Jays*
2.  Boston Red Sox*
3.  Baltimore Orioles
4.  New York Yankees
5.  Tampa Bay Rays

Final Standings
1.  Toronto Blue Jays*
2.  New York Yankees*
3.  Baltimore Orioles
4.  Tampa Bay Rays
5.  Boston Red Sox

This division saw the Blue Jays end up on top for the first time since 1993.  Mid-season trades for Troy Tulowitzki and David Price helped lead the stretch run and the best offense in the league.  The main question entering the season for the Yankees was if their age would catch up to them, especially with Alex Rodriguez returning from his year suspension.  They definitely answered that, sliding into the Wild Card slot in the most competitive race of the season.  The Orioles struggled down the stretch and will need to actually have an active offseason to change their fate in 2016.  Tampa Bay got off to a hot start and showed definite potential moving forward as the ultimate small market team.  The Red Sox were a big disappointment this year.  I predicted them as a Wild Card team before the season, but injuries as well as some free agent busts leaves one of the marquee franchises in the league in definite disarray moving forward.

AL Central
My Preseason Predictions
1.  Kansas City Royals*
2.  Detroit Tigers
3.  Chicago White Sox
4.  Cleveland Indians
5.  Minnesota Twins

Final Standings
1.  Kansas City Royals*
2.  Minnesota Twins
3.  Cleveland Indians
4.  Chicago White Sox
5.  Detroit Tigers

I was one of the few that saw the Royals finding a way to ride their postseason momentum from 2014 into a division championship in 2015.  However, that's about all I got right.  The Minnesota Twins were easily the biggest surprise in the league, as they went from consensus cellar-dwellers to almost winning a Wild Card berth.  The Cleveland Indians were exactly what I thought they would be.  They were good, but just not good enough to be much of a factor.  They hung around the Wild Card race for awhile, but no one really thought they could make it.  The bottom two teams were two of the biggest disappointments of the 2015 season.  The White Sox made some offseason moves that seemed to position them for a successful season.  It turned out to not be the case.  Then there is the Tigers, who had won the division the last 4 years, but a series of injuries and slumps saw them hit the cellar and put manager Brad Ausmus on the list of "could be fired" managers heading into the offseason.

AL West
My Preseason Predictions
1.  Los Angeles Angels
2.  Seattle Mariners
3.  Houston Astros
4.  Texas Rangers
5.  Oakland A's

Final Standings
1.  Texas Rangers*
2.  Houston Astros*
3.  Los Angeles Angels
4.  Seattle Mariners
5.  Oakland A's

I really messed this one up.  After finishing the 2014 season with the worst record in the AL, the Texas Rangers rebound and win the division which no one saw coming, especially after an early season injury to ace Yu Darvish.  I knew the Astros would be good this year, but I had no idea they would be this good.  After a series of trades, they eventually slowed down and squeaked into the playoffs, but after years at the bottom of the AL, the youth movement in Houston is finally paying off and is only looking to get better moving forward.  The Angels had a disappointing year.  With the resurgence of Albert Pujols and with the best player in the league in Mike Trout, anything less than the playoffs would be a disappointment.  Add to the a split in the organization that led to GM Jerry DiPoto walking away mid-season, and it was a bizarre year.  With all that said, they entered the last weekend still with a shot at a Wild Card.  The Mariners can go alongside the Tigers as the most disappointing teams in the league in 2015.  After missing the playoffs by a game a year ago, expectations were high entering the season, with some wondering if they could be a World Series favorite.  However, the M's proved to have the same struggles to score they always have which led to the Mariners finding a new GM by the end of the season.  The one thing I got right was what I was the least sure about in the division.  For the past few years, I always feel like, entering the season, the A's look sub-par.  This is the first year I was actually right.  Knowing them, they will be back to competitive soon.

NL East
My Preseason Predictions
1.  Washington Nationals*
2.  Miami Marlins
3.  Atlanta Braves
4.  New York Mets
5.  Philadelphia Phillies

Final Standings
1.  New York Mets*
2.  Washington Nationals
3.  Miami Marlins
4.  Atlanta Braves
5.  Philadelphia Phillies

Where did the Mets come from?!?  The young pitching in New York became breakout stars across the league as they carried their team to a surprising postseason berth.  Of all the disappointments across the league, the Nationals have to be the worst.  For a team that was set up before the season as "World Series or Bust," they didn't even make the playoffs.  Entering the season, they had the best pitching staff and the best lineup in the National League.  To not make the playoffs almost ensures that manager Matt Williams will not be leading the team in 2016.  The Miami Marlins followed up a strong 2014 season with a disappointing dumpster fire in 2015 that led to their manager (unfairly) being fired mid-season and replaced by their GM that had never managed at any level before.  Only the Marlins...  For the first time since the 1980's, the Braves are in full re-build mode as they dropped low in the rankings as they replenish the farm system and work their way back to prominence.  The biggest lock in all of baseball entering the season was that the Phillies would be the worst team in baseball.  You can definitely say they didn't disappoint.

NL Central
My Preseason Predictions
1.  Pittsburgh Pirates*
2.  St. Louis Cardinals*
3.  Chicago Cubs
4.  Milwaukee Brewers
5.  Cincinnati Reds

Final Standings
1.  St. Louis Cardinals*
2.  Pittsburgh Pirates*
3.  Chicago Cubs*
4.  Milwaukee Brewers
5.  Cincinnati Reds

I wanted to think that the time had come for the Cardinals to be dethroned atop the NL Central, but then I forgot that it's the Cardinals and their success always defies logic.  Their rotation became the best in baseball, and they once again show they never miss on a prospect.  That means the Pirates were once again the bridesmaid and will host their third straight Wild Card Game.  The surprise here is the Chicago Cubs.  I knew Joe Maddon would make them an improved team, but I didn't see them being playoff-bound in his first season.  The emergence of Jake Arrieta as a star, as well as young sluggers in Kris Bryant and Kyle Schwarber, has the league buzzing with the idea that the Cubs might be a perennial contender to finally break their streak.  The Brewers may have been the blandest team in baseball, as they had nothing to make them stand out in any way throughout the season.  Then there is the Reds, who became the last team in the 4 major sports to finish in the cellar in their division since 1984.  They still have talent on that roster that simply aging and under-performing.  The biggest mystery might be why the Reds have already announce that Bryan Price will be back as their manager next season.

NL West
My Preseason Predictions
1.  Los Angeles Dodgers*
2.  San Diego Padres*
3.  San Francisco Giants
4.  Colorado Rockies
5.  Arizona Diamondbacks

Final Standings
1.  Los Angeles Dodgers*
2.  San Francisco Giants
3.  Arizona Diamondbacks
4.  San Diego Padres
5.  Colorado Rockies

The Dodgers needed to win this division for the same reason the Nationals needed to win theirs: they were just too good not to.  Now we will see if they can actually cause some damage in the postseason.  The Giants continue their streak of missing the playoffs on odd-numbered years, which means you are looking at the World Series favorite in 2016.  The Diamondbacks had a surprising season led by the best player no one has heard of (still) in Paul Goldschmidt.  Another great disappointment was the Padres.  History tells us that trying to buy a team in one offseason almost never works so we should have seen this rough Padres season coming.  Then there is the Rockies that had such a poor season, they were willing to part with their best player to try and build for the future.

My Postseason Awards

Manager of the Year
AL - Paul Molitor - MIN
NL - Joe Maddon - CHC
The Twins and the Cubs both went from the cellar to competing for a playoff spot, with very little changes made to their personnel outside of their manager.  That is the definition of a Manager of the Year.  Molitor and Maddon became game-changers for their teams and were able to completely change the culture of the teams in just one season.

Rookie of the Year
AL
1.  Carlos Correa - HOU
2.  Miguel Sano - MIN
3.  Billy Burns - OAK
4.  Devon Travis - TOR
5.  Mark Canha - OAK

Carlos Correa was able to successfully transfer his "phenom prospect" status into "emerging superstar."  He quickly became one of the leaders on an Astros team heading to the playoffs.  Devon Travis had an opportunity to be much higher on this list if he had been healthy all season.  Miguel Sano quietly had a stellar season (quietly only because it happened in Minnesota).  Burns and Canha, who are the epitome of "Moneyball" players, only reinforce my suspicions that the A's will be back sooner rather than later.
NL
1.  Kris Bryant - CHC
2.  Joc Pederson - LAD
3.  Jung Ho Kang - PIT
4.  Noah Syndergaard - NYM
5.  Matt Duffy - SF

This is one of the deepest rookie field I have ever seen.  From Spring Training till now, Kris Bryant and his immense talent has been one of the best stories of 2015.  He met all expectations and exceeded (which was thought to be impossible) them as he helped lead his team to the playoffs.  Pederson had a dream first half, and although he struggled down the stretch, his numbers are undeniable.  Jung Ho Kang entered the season as an unknown, and now he has single-handedly allowed the Pirates to once again use Josh Harrison as a super utility player.  Noah Syndergaard joined Harvey and deGrom at the top of the best young pitching staff in baseball.  Matt Duffy came out of nowhere to make the Giants quickly forget about fan favorite Pablo Sandoval.

Cy Young Award
AL
1.  Dallas Keuchel - HOU
2.  David Price - DET / TOR
3.  Felix Hernandez - SEA
4.  Sonny Gray - OAK
5.  Chris Sale - CWS

I said at the beginning of the season that Dallas Keuchel was the most important pitcher to the Astros' success.  After putting up the numbers he did, no wonder the Astros are going to the playoffs.  For the second time in a year, David Price changed teams.  It isn't that he isn't wanted, but that other teams want him so much.  He took a solid season for the Tigers and became the leader of the Blue Jays on this playoff push.  King Felix did not have the numbers he usually does, but with that said, he came close to his career high in wins.  This goes to prove that an average Felix is better than most pitchers' best seasons.  Sonny Gray proved to be a budding ace in the A's rotation.  Lastly, Chris Sale once again put up outstanding numbers on a bad team.  The White Sox need to get good soon or else Sale will be taking his talents elsewhere much like Price has.
NL
1.  Jake Arrieta - CHC
2.  Zack Greinke - LAD
3.  Clayton Kershaw - LAD
4.  Gerrit Cole - PIT
5.  Max Scherzer - WAS

Last year was all about Kershaw.  Although his numbers are not what they were last year, he was still incredibly good.  The first half of 2015 was all about Greinke.  He put up ridiculous numbers and had an opportunity to set records.  However, the second half of the season was all about Jake Arrieta.  Everyone wanted to talk about Jon Lester to start the season for the Cubs, but Arrieta became the ace and is the best pitcher in baseball going into the postseason.  Gerrit Cole emerged as the ace the Pirates needed.  One of the few things on the Nationals that didn't disappoint this season was Max Scherzer.  Two no hitters automatically puts you in the top five of this list in my book.

MVP
AL
1.  Josh Donaldson - TOR
2.  Mike Trout - LAA
3.  Nelson Cruz - SEA
4.  Prince Fielder - TEX
5.  Lorenzo Cain - KC

Even though Josh Donaldson changed teams this offseason, his impact on his team did not.  In an offense that already had Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion and now also boasts Troy Tulowitzki, Donaldson has been their best player and one of the main reasons they find themselves in the playoffs.  Mike Trout is the best player in baseball, and even though his team will not be in the playoffs, it isn't because of Trout.  Nelson Cruz was one of the few bright spots for a struggling Mariner offense.  For some time, Cruz was flirting with a Triple Crown.  Prince Fielder came back from the injury that cost him most of his season in 2014 and became the main cog that led the Rangers back to the playoffs.  Lorenzo Cain emerged as this year as the brightest star on the AL's best team.  That alone garners a spot on this list.
NL
1.  Paul Goldschmidt - ARZ
2.  Bryce Harper - WAS
3.  Nolan Arenado - COL
4.  Kris Bryant - CHC
5.  Andrew McCutchen - PIT

The Diamondbacks exceeded expectations this season, and Paul Goldschmidt is one of the main reasons why.  He is possibly the best pure all-around hitter in all of baseball.  Bryce Harper put up ridiculous numbers, but where Goldschmidt led his team to over-achieving, Harper's team vastly under-achieved.  Although his numbers were great, he needed to lead his team to the playoffs to win MVP for me.  Nolan Arenado was on one of the worst teams in baseball, but when it comes to the Rockies, it is never because they can't hit.  Arenado will continue to develop into one of the best players in all of baseball.  Kris Bryant went from top prospect to MVP candidate.  Andrew McCutchen, along with Trout, is one of the best all-around players in baseball.  By the way, it shows just how much success in the NL is determined by pitching when the top three MVP candidates are not on playoff teams.

Postseason Predictions

Wild Card Round
Astros def. Yankees
Pirates def. Cubs
The AL Wild Card Game features two surprises for two different reasons.  The Astros weren't supposed to be this good this soon, and the Yankees weren't supposed to be this good this old.  So which Cinderella will make it to the next round?  I think Dallas Keuchel has been too good, and the Yankees have really limped their way into the playoffs.  I expect the Astros to walk out of the Big Apple with a big win.

The Pirates have gotten used to being here.  This is their third straight Wild Card Game they have hosted.  They won the first one, then got MadBum'ed (along with the rest of the league) last year.  They are ready to take the next step.  The Cubs are the team everyone is talking about as they try to reverse history.  Arrieta has never faced the bright lights of the postseason before, along with most of the Cubs' key players.  The Cubs might possibly get there with this current core, but not this year.  It's the Pirates who are ready for the next level.

Divisional Round
Blue Jays def. Rangers
Royals def. Astros
Dodgers def. Mets
Pirates def. Cardinals
The Rangers might be the biggest surprise of this postseason.  Not only were they not supposed to be this good, but they were nowhere close to this level halfway through the season.  They traded for Cole Hamels telling him, "Don't worry, we'll be good next year."  Then they won the division.  As good of a story as it is, the Blue Jays are a better team and a better story.  They will have the fire and momentum that the Royals had last year on their unlikely run through the playoffs.

As for the actual Royals, many predicted a World Series hangover after their miracle run last year.  but instead they worked their way to the best record in the AL.  They sputtered their way through September, but I think this was mainly because they saw the postseason coming.  If they showed anything last year, they know what it takes to win in the playoffs.  Again, they were a MadBum away from a World Series ring.  They also have one of the best home field advantages in all of baseball.  They will take care of the Astros.

The Dodgers and Mets is an intriguing series.  The Dodgers are trying once again to take the next step and show they can be a serious contender in the playoffs.  On the other hand, the Mets are loaded with young talent that has jump started a fan base.  As good as the Mets' young pitchers are, I think they are too concerned with keeping them healthy to win this year (sounds a little like the Nationals a few years ago ... we all saw how that went...).  The Dodgers are hungry for a win.  Kershaw and Greinke have been two of the best pitchers in the league, but they have yet to show it in the postseason.  They are also more than just the veteran core they have featured recently.  Rookies like Joc Pederson and Corey Seager will bring a spark and enthusiasm.  Something about this team feels different than past years.

This next series is the toughest to pick.  The Cardinals are really hard to beat in the postseason.  Their pitching is some of the best in the league, and their lineup seems to constantly get the job done no matter who is in it.  With all that said, if any team is built to beat them, it's the Pirates.  They are already division rivals so they know each other well.  The Pirates can hit, they can pitch, and they are not intimidated by the Cards.  The X factor in this series will be the health of Yadier Molina.  If he is healthy enough to play his game at the elite level only Yadier can, then the Cardinals will probably win.  I don't think he will.

Championship Series
Royals def. Blue Jays
Dodgers def. Pirates
If this is the ALCS, it might be the loudest and most exciting playoff series of all time.  These are two of the most passionate fan bases in the league, and they are both starving for greatness from their teams.  They are very similar teams with strong offenses and possible weaknesses in the starting rotation.  Last year, the Royals showed they can hit against anyone in the playoffs (not named Madison Bumgarner), and they gained invaluable experience almost no one on the Blue Jays roster has.  Their experience, along with home field advantage and the best bullpen in baseball (even without Greg Holland) will lead the Royals back the World Series.

If the Dodgers break through and win one series, they should ride that confidence to the World Series.  They don't get here without Kershaw and Greinke being on top of their games, and if they are, they can handle the Pirates lineup.  I love the Pirates and would love to see them take another step, but I just don't see that happening.

World Series
Royals def. Dodgers
I ended up with the same World Series matchup that I had before the season, so I might as well go with the same prediction for the result.  No one thought the Royals could make the playoffs last year.  Then they were a batter away from winning it all.  No one thought they could bounce back and make the playoffs again this year.  They ended up with the best record in the AL.  No one thinks their team is playing well enough to make any noise in the playoffs now.  So I am picking them to win it all.  There is something about this team that never gives up.  They will ride this to the title they probably should have won last year.  Royals in 6, with Alex Gordon winning World Series MVP.
Bring on the Fall Classic!!!
